This short guide will answer the questions on how to embed the Looker Studio report in different types of websites and what restrictions such embedding has.
Google has an instruction explaining how the embedding feature works, but it doesn’t answer all questions.
Looker Studio embed options
For example, I have a Google Search Console Looker Studio template and I would like to embed it.
At first, I should have access to edit the report. I have it. Then I should turn on the Edit mode of the report instead of the View mode. And only after that, I can find a button to embed a report.
After clicking Embed report I see the following popup
So, here I have 2 options.
Embed Code
This option allows you to embed a report to your own website or blog where you have access to edit HTML code. For example, the easiest way to embed a report into a WordPress website is to go to the Text editor when editing a page or a post and paste an iframe code.
After publishing all page visitors will see the report, BUT without the ability to choose a property connected to their own Google account (see the screenshot below, there disappeared a Google Search Console connector). So, this is the biggest limitation of using the embed code option. You can’t share an opportunity to use a specific Looker Studio template for users’ data, you can just share your own data.
And here is how the embed URL option can help you.
Embed URL
So, I am going to embed URL option and copying URL to the clipboard. This feature won’t work with my WordPress website. It works only on the websites that use oEmbed technology, for example, Reddit or Medium. By the way, I think that there should exist WordPress plugins that will help to enable this technology for WP sites too. If you know one, please send them to the chat.
So, I decided to test the embed URL on my Medium blog. I started a new post, entered a copied URL there and clicked enter.
A few seconds later a report appeared in the draft. And after publishing a post every page visitor will see the template. But, in this case, the Google Search Console connector is available! So, users can choose their own GSC property and apply the template for their own website data.
In my case, if you visit Medium without signing in via Google, Looker Studio will ask you to authorize your Google account and after that, you can choose any GSC property that is connected to your Google account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you embed the Looker Studio report in the website giving the end-user ability to authorize his Google account?
Yes, but only on the websites that use oEmbed technology and only via embed URL option.
What does the issue ‘viewing in other websites has been disabled by the report owner’ mean?
Below is an example of the issue. It appears when the Looker Studio report owner disables the embedding feature in the report. But you can click View this report in Looker Studio and get access to the report if the viewing access is still live.
Can you embed the Looker Studio report in Google Slides?
Unfortunately, no. You can’t do that even using Embed URL. If you’ll click Insert in the header in Google Slides you’ll find that there is no option to embed data from Looker Studio (only Google Sheets are available).
You also can try to paste iframe code or embed URL as text to the Google slide — embedding won’t work. I guess that Google Docs team thinks that using Looker Studio in Google Slides isn’t a good choice. Google Slide has a limited space and primarily it is used to present one simple thought per slide. This isn’t a place where the audience will work with the Looker Studio report.
So, if you want to share the report just paste a link to it. If you need to present some important graph from Looker Studio, make a screenshot and paste it as an image.
But if you are still interested in appearing of this feature, you can vote for the requests Looker Studio to Google Slides of other users that they already published in Google Issue Tracker.
How to embed the Looker Studio report in the website without giving the end-user the URL?
You can’t do that. Google says in the guide about embedding: “Embedded reports always contain the Looker Studio watermark and full-screen option. You can’t remove these”. So, if you want to secure your report as maximum as possible, make sure that you set up access to the embed report for view only and a checkbox to disable downloading, printing and copying for viewers is active.
