How to manage email notifications?
By default, Google Search Console will start sending you all email notifications and alerts it has, after setting up Search Console for your website. Below is an example of different email types I get from all my verified properties.
But often you can find that you aren’t interested in some type of emails. Can you unsubscribe from them? Yes!
But there are 2 important points:
- You can’t unsubscribe from email notifications directly from the Google Search Console interface.
- As email preferences are available in the User settings, not the Property settings, if you unsubscribe from one type of email you will unsubscribe from these emails by all your verified projects.
To check this, click on the User settings icon in the Search Console.
Then click the Email preferences option and you’ll find that you can’t view all types of emails you receive and you can’t unsubscribe from some of them in the interface, only from all emails, removing the checkbox Enable notification by email.
To unsubscribe from some email type you should find it in your email box, scroll down, and click unsubscribe.
After that, you will find in Email preferences the type of email you unsubscribed from. And there you can immediately subscribe again.
Let’s see which types of email you can get.
Types of emails Search Console sends to website owners
It can be difficult to find all email types from the Search Console in your email inbox. Instead, you can find all messages by clicking the bell icon called Messages near the User settings icon. There is a list of all messages Search Console sent you. There also exists a filter of types of messages.
Let me share examples of some emails I get from Search Console.
1. Get started using Search Console
First email after successful website verification.
2. Monitor the Google Search traffic
The email after generating the first impression in Google. It proves that the website was successfully scanned, indexed, and ranked which means that you did the first setup and published the first content properly.
3. New Page indexing issues detected
Google Search Console doesn’t know which types of pages you deleted or excluded from the index by mistake and which by your desire. So you will get a notification in any case.
4. New Video page indexing issues detected
Search Console has a separate page with the list of video issues and separate alerts too.
5. Congrats on reaching X clicks in X days
I like these emails 🙂 It motives me to work on the website.
6. Your {month} Search performance
This is the most useful email type for me because it has many insights about the dynamics: which queries and pages grow, how many clicks they get, and more. Especially for such insights I’ve created my Search Console Looker Studio template, Google Analytics 4 Looker Studio Template, Keyword Ranking Template, and monthly SEO Report Template.
7. Search Console property is now associated with Google Analytics property
This is an informational email that you’ve successfully connected Google Search Console to Google Analytics property.
8. New Mobile Usability issues detected
9. New Review snippets issue detected
10. New Coverage issue detected
11. Disavow file updated
12. Increase in 404 pages
This is not the comprehensive list of all emails, but it contains the most popular ones.
Also, don’t miss out on subscribing to my email newsletter, where I share my new Looker Studio templates and SEO experiments.
